How do you choose the right marketing company for your business?
How do you choose the right marketing company for your business?
Choosing the wrong agency is a costly decision: you lose your budget, your time, and most importantly, months of market position. Most people who have had bad experiences didn't make a mistake with their budget, but rather with their selection criteria.
These are seven practical criteria, and four signs that are worth noting.
1. Is the company licensed?
Start here. A legally licensed company—and one with a media license if they produce content and campaigns—operates within a clear framework, and you have a point of contact in case of a dispute. Ask about their business registration; don't just rely on an Instagram account.
2. Do you understand your sector?
Marketing restaurants is different from marketing schools, and both are different from marketing home appliance stores. An agency that has worked in your sector before knows what appeals to your audience, when they buy, and what content they engage with—saving you months of trial and error.
3. Do you start with the study or with the implementation?
A reputable agency will ask you before presenting a proposal: What is your goal? Who is your target audience? Who are your competitors? And where do you stand today? Anyone who presents you with a plan before understanding your business is simply selling a template.
4. Are the outputs numerically defined?
"Monthly content" is not an output. The outputs are: the number of designs, the number of videos, the number of photoshoots, the managed platforms, and the reporting rate. Clarity here protects you later.
5. Do you receive reports?
Without a monthly report, you won't know what worked and what went wrong. Ask about a sample report before hiring, and see if it measures results or just shows the number of posts.
6. What did you actually hear?
Search for the company name on Google Maps and read the reviews. The number of reviews is just as important as the star rating: one five-star review means nothing, but a hundred reviews with an average rating of 4.8 mean a lot.
7. Who will contact you?
Ask: Do I have a dedicated account manager? And what is the response time? Many problems do not arise from poor execution but from a breakdown in communication.
Four warning signs
Ensuring pre-determined digital results
No one can guarantee "front page within a week" or a specific sales figure. Anyone who does is either exaggerating or using tactics that will harm your business in the long run.
Price significantly lower than the market price
This often means significantly less output or recycled content. Ask for a breakdown of the output, and the picture will become clear immediately.
Refusal to clarify what is excluded
Advertising budget, additional filming, post-delivery revisions — all must be explicitly stated.
Absence of a written contract
The contract protects both parties. Its absence is sufficient grounds for termination.
